SAT/ACT

Math Prep

Both the SAT and ACT will evaluate students on a variety of math topics. Listed below are the particular areas where both the SAT and ACT challenges students.

Algebra and Functions: Questions from this area stems from traditional Algebra I and Algebra II courses.

Geometry: Our experience suggests that most students have not studied geometry for one or more years prior to taking the SAT or ACT. Because this topic is emphasized throughout both tests, an adequate understanding of geometry is crucial for all students.

Numbers and Operations: A topic that many math students have little experience with. Questions involving number theory, probability, and statistics play a substantial role on both tests.

What we do…

  • Build student confidence by teaching them how to take this type of math test.
  • Reinforce math topics students may have not studied for at least a year.
  • Identify student strengths in particular areas to help optimize their testing potential.

Critical Reading/Writing

The verbal portion of the SAT includes Critical Reading and Writing. Critical Reading is divided into two parts- Sentence Completions and Reading Passages.

Sentence Completions: Students focus on recognizing sentence structure, identifying clues, building vocabulary, and using different strategies to solve difficult sentences.

Reading Strategies: Students focus on active reading and specific strategies for answering the questions. Students become familiar with the different types of questions and the most common incorrect answers.

Writing: This portion of the prep is divided into two parts-Multiple Choice and Essay Writing. The multiple choice portion of the instruction will focus on types of questions and strategies - Error Recognition, Sentence and Paragraph Improvement, Subject-Verb Agreement, Verb Tense, Pronouns, Noun Agreement, Comparisons, Parallelism… and more. Through the Essay portion of the prep, student will learn how the essays are scored, and what the readers are looking for. Students will review the process of writing a 25 minute essay, from brainstorming to creating a thesis to outlining to writing.

Every Student will learn overall test taking Strategies- Seting Goal and Range, Pacing, Process of Elimination and more.
