Study Skills Class
Attention Rising 6th Graders
Middle School Study Skills
Middle School can be both an exciting and scary time for students. They face increased academic and social demands. Their teachers and parents expect them to take a higher level of personal responsibility for their work and study habits. The students themselves desire more independence. Possessing essential organization, time management, and study skills can help students work more efficiently and effectively. Students and parents will notice an increased level of confidence.
Session A: July 26-30 Monday-Friday 9:00 AM-12:00 PM
Session B: August 2-6 Monday-Friday 9:00 AM-12:00 PM
Session Components:
Assessing Personal Learning Styles – Students will assess their personal learning style and recognize the importance of working with, rather than against, that style.
The Importance of Organization – Students will learn strategies for keeping their lives and assignments organized. They will look at the successes and problems that they have had with organization in the past and develop a plan of attack for the future. Students will learn how to:
- Set up a study space.
- Keep notebooks organized.
- Keep a master calendar.
- Prepare ahead for the next day
Time Management Skills – Students will learn how to set up a study schedule and juggle multiple academic demands. They will learn how to prioritize assignments, set goals, and evaluate the effectiveness of their time use.
Managing Long-Term Assignments – Students will learn how to tackle a long-term assignment, such as a research project or novel unit. They will practice understanding the requirements of an assignment, breaking the assignment into components, and estimating the amount of time that it will take to complete the assignment.
Studying for Tests and Quizzes – Students will learn effective methods for studying for tests and quizzes and learn that studying doesn't have to be boring.
Academic Coaching
Today’s students are often overscheduled andoverwhelmed. The demands of rigorous courses, after school sports and other extra curricular activities make “keeping-up” difficult for many. Students find themselves procrastinating, cramming, staying up late completing projects, papers and reports.
Academic Coaching helps students plan and utilize their time effectively and efficiently. Students learn how to learn as they become independent and self-regulated.
Initially, students meet with their academic coach for 6 one hour sessions. Follow-up consultations are highly recommended to be sure students maintain skills.
